The Interaction of Input and UG in the Acquisition of Verb Movement in a Dialect of Norwegian

چکیده
1. Introduction In this paper it will be argued that a principle of information structure provided by Universal Grammar (UG) may interact with input in the acquisition of word order. In a study which investigates three children from the age of approximately 1;9 to 3 acquiring a Northern dialect of Norwegian, it has previously been shown that word order patterns in certain types of wh-questions which are sensitive to subtle distinctions in the information value of the subject (given vs. new) are acquired extremely early (Westergaard 2003a). This paper presents a study of the same children's topicalization constructions, and it will be shown that, although these patterns of information structure do not appear in the input, the children nevertheless show traces of these patterns in the non-target forms that they occasionally produce. Thus, in their very early production of topicalization constructions the children seem to be guided by a word order principle based on information structure, which could be taken as support for this as a word order preferred by UG.

“Borrowing” is a lingual process that is studied in diachronic linguistics. In this process a language borrows elements from another language. This process usually occurs in areas that two languages make contact with each other. In a dialect spoken in South Khorasan the language borrowing happens. This experimental study investigated the learners’ integrative acquisition of obligatory overt subjects and subject-verb clause agreement in English as an L2. In L1 acquisition research, correlations between superficially unrelated linguistic phenomena are analyzed in terms of integrative effects. For instance, in English L1 acquisition, there is evidence for an integrative appearance of subjec...
متن کاملThe (Non-) Effect of Input Frequency on the Acquisition of Word Order in Norwegian Embedded Clauses
In this paper we show that input frequency plays a role in the acquisition of word order, but only combined with other factors. Two constructions with similar input frequencies are investigated: embedded questions and (all) embedded clauses with negation. It is shown that the lack of input cues for the target word order in embedded clauses with negation leads children to overgeneralize main cla...
متن کاملVerb Movement and Subject Placement in the Acquisition of Word Order : Pragmatics or Structural Economy ?
This paper reports on a study investigating three children acquiring a dialect of Norwegian (Tromsø). It is shown that, although verb second (V2) word order is attested early in non-subject-initial declaratives and questions, the children produce nontarget-consistent word order in these constructions at an early stage, failing to move pronominal subjects past negation or an adverb. This is anal...

This research showed that appropriate input and suitable contexts for interaction among students can lead to successful second language acquisition (SLA). This study based on Swain's (2005) notion of collaborative dialogue, aimed to study whether EFL learners participating in negotiation of meaning based tasks collaborate with each other and, if so, to investigate the role of this behavior in ...
